THIS WEEK: 762 Events and Activities in Missouri to Raise Awareness About School Choice
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo., Jan. 18, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- As thousands of Missourians are celebrating School Choice Week, schools of all types are connecting with their local community to raise awareness about education options.
The Week will feature 762 events and activities across the Show Me State, including open house events at schools, school fairs, homeschool information sessions, and other celebrations. One of the largest events in the state will be a rally on Thursday, January 24, 2019 12:00 p.m. at the Missouri Capitol in Jefferson City. In addition, a school fair is planned in St. Louis on 10:00 AM on Saturday, January 19, 2019 at the Grand Hall on Chouteau.
Nationwide, 40,549 events and activities are being organized to raise awareness during National School Choice Week (Jan. 20-26, 2019), and 10.8 million Americans are expected to participate. It will be the largest series of education-related events and activities in U.S. history.
In Missouri, there are many educational options, including traditional public schools, public charter schools, public magnet schools, private schools, online learning, and homeschooling. Any student in Missouri, from kindergarten through 12th grade, can take courses online through the Missouri Virtual Instruction Program. Students with certain medical conditions can have the tuition waived.
On the local level, elected officials and community leaders are recognizing the importance of educational opportunity by officially recognizing the Week. Governor Michael Parson issued an official proclamation recognizing Jan. 20-26 as Missouri School Choice Week. In addition, the counties of Crawford and Newton and the cities of Belton, Boonville, Branson, Gideon, Lexington, Smithville, and Wentzville have issued proclamations recognizing School Choice Week in their community.
Celebrated since 2011, National School Choice Week is an independent public awareness effort. The Week is nonpartisan and nonpolitical, and it is not related to any legislative advocacy campaign.
