Entries open December 15 for National Newspaper Awards
TORONTO, Dec. 14, 2018 /CNW/ - The National Newspaper Awards (NNAs) will begin accepting entries for the 2018 competition at 9 a.m. ET on Saturday, December 15.
Entries will be accepted in 21 categories between December 15, 2018, and January 15, 2019. Finalists will be announced in mid-March, and winners will be announced at a gala on Friday, May 3, in Toronto.
The entry fee is $40 + HST per entry for organizations on the NNA Benefactor List, and $50 + HST per entry for entries from other organizations.
To be eligible, an entry must have been published first in 2018 by an eligible organization, with the work having been performed by an eligible entrant, as defined under the contest Rules of Entry. A few changes to rules and categories were announced earlier this year. Highlights include:
- The competition is now open to community newspapers and other organizations that publish original content, digitally or otherwise, at least five days a week. To participate in the 2018 competition, organizations that had not previously been accepted for participation were required to apply for eligibility before December 1.
- The Photo Portfolio/Photo Essay category has been amended to become simply Photo Essay, with portfolio entries no longer accepted.
- In all four photo categories, entrants are no longer limited in the number of entries they may submit.
- Supporting letters are now required for entries involving outside funding, involvement or support for the entered work, including work done through co-productions involving more than one news organization. Such letters must provide details about the outside support and/or co-production arrangement and certify that the entered work was entirely or substantially performed on behalf of organization(s) eligible to enter the competition. In addition, entries involving outside funding, involvement or support, including co-productions, must supply any other information requested by contest organizers for the purpose of ensuring that the entry is eligible and compliant with contest rules and procedures, and that judges are able to properly assess the work.
- Supporting letters are also required for all entries from individuals whose entered work was done on a freelance or contract basis, rather than as an employee of the organization that published the work. Such letters must outline the individual's journalistic activity during the year for which the work is being entered. In addition, entrants whose work was done on a freelance or contract basis must supply any other information requested by contest organizers for the purpose of ensuring that the entry is eligible and compliant with contest rules and procedures, and that judges are able to properly assess the work.
This is the 70th year of the awards, which were established in 1949 to encourage excellence and reward achievement in daily newspaper work in Canada.
