Statement by the Honourable Diane Lebouthillier, Minister of National Revenue on the 2018 Fall Reports of the Auditor General of Canada

OTTAWA, Nov. 20, 2018 /CNW Telbec/ - The Honourable Diane Lebouthillier, Minister of National Revenue, today issued the following statement in response to the report entitled: "Compliance Activities-Canada Revenue Agency" in the 2018 Fall Reports of the Auditor General of Canada:

"Our Government is committed to ensuring that our tax system is fair and equitable for all. Since being named Minister of National Revenue, one of my main priorities has been to improve the way we work with Canadians across the country to help them meet their tax obligations.

I wish to thank the Auditor General and his team for their work in examining processes related to the Canada Revenue Agency's (CRA) compliance activities. The CRA's compliance work must be done in a fair and effective manner in order to maintain the trust of Canadians in our self-assessment tax system.

I agree with the Auditor General's recommendations related to improving reporting and processes.

The CRA has already started to produce more strategic performance indicators, such as the tax gap estimates launched in 2016. The CRA will continue to build on this work with additional estimates to better report on our successes to Canadians.

With regards to our processes, through education, outreach and enforcement, the CRA continuously strives to apply the law consistently while taking taxpayers' individual circumstances into account. In response to the Office of the Auditor General's recommendations, the Agency will review its internal processes and procedures to ensure its compliance work follows sound and transparent processes.

As Minister of National Revenue, I wish to remind Canadians that I am working on your behalf to ensure that our tax system is fair for everyone, throughout Canada."
