The AFNQL commends the members of the Legault Cabinet and quickly wants to start working to renew the political relationship

WENDAKE, QC, Oct. 19, 2018 /CNW Telbec/ - On behalf of the Assembly of First Nations Quebec-Labrador (AFNQL), Chief Ghislain Picard would like to congratulate the new members of the provincial Cabinet sworn in yesterday. The AFNQL also welcomes the appointment of the Minister responsible for Indigenous Affairs, Ms. Sylvie D'Amours. This new Cabinet marks a fundamental opportunity to initiate a political relationship based on openness, respect, dignity and on the desire of our respective governments to prioritize issues that are far too often left out of the political spectrum.

Beyond the Nation-specific issues and whenever possible, the AFNQL is ready to initiate discussions on the expected commitments that it publicly issued during the electoral campaign. The AFNQL also offers its collaboration to ensure that Premier Legault and the key ministries that will be solicited understand the scope and magnitude of the importance that First Nations give to their issues.

"The AFNQL expects quick answers on issues related to the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, the development of the economy for First Nations including the principle of income sharing, as well as safety for our people, on and off our communities. Expectations are high, and the Government as a whole is being called upon," said AFNQL Chief Ghislain Picard.

"The announcement of the new Cabinet and the words of Premier Legault, who intends to govern taking into account the future of First Nations and Inuit, presents an opportunity to establish the political relationship on a sound basis. We look forward to engaging in this dialogue and awaiting the Premier's response to our invitation to take part in our next meeting in mid-November," concluded the Chief of the AFNQL.
