AFGE Endorses Maryland Rep. Steny Hoyer for Reelection

WASHINGTON, Oct. 11, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- The American Federation of Government Employees today announced its endorsement of Rep. Steny Hoyer for reelection to Congress representing Maryland's 5th Congressional District.

The American Federation of Government Employees, the largest union representing federal and D.C. government workers, today announced its endorsement of Rep. Steny Hoyer for reelection to Congress representing Maryland's 5th Congressional District.

"Federal workers have no better friend in Congress than Rep. Steny Hoyer," AFGE District 4 National Vice President Dan Doyle said. "For decades, Congressman Hoyer has been a leader in advancing the interests of federal workers and supporting the programs and services we deliver every day. As the second highest ranking Democrat in Congress, Minority Whip Hoyer is a powerful ally for working people everywhere."

"Congressman Hoyer understands that federal employees are America's workforce. That's why he fights to provide federal workers with the pay raises and benefits they deserve and block bad legislation that would outsource federal jobs and undermine our apolitical civil service," Doyle said. "With public-sector employees across this country facing unprecedented attacks on their workplace rights, it's more important than ever that we support candidates like Steny who will always have our backs."

More than 147,500 federal employees live in Maryland ? caring for veterans, supporting our military, ensuring Medicaid and Medicare recipients get their health care benefits, and protecting our natural resources. There are nearly 125,131 current and retired federal workers in the 5th District.

"I'm pleased to represent over 62,000 hardworking federal employees in Maryland's 5th District, and I appreciate having AFGE's support," Congressman Hoyer said. "From keeping our drinking water clean to ensuring our veterans have the support they need, federal employees ensure our government works effectively for its citizens. I'm proud to partner with AFGE in advocating for the pay and benefits our federal employees have earned, and I thank them for their tireless work on behalf of our federal civilian workforce."

AFGE is the largest federal employee union in the country, representing 700,000 federal and D.C. government workers in all functions of government. District 4 represents nearly 48,000 federal employees in Maryland, North Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia.
