Gutiérrez, whose reporting in his home country made him a target of death threats, accepted the Club's John Aubuchon Press Freedom award on behalf of Mexico's journalists in October. Two months later, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement threatened to deport him. When the Board of Immigration Appeals stayed that action, ICE took Gutiérrez and his son into custody.

The National Press Club, along with nearly two dozen other professional press organizations and a number of newspaper editorial boards, are calling on the U.S. government to release the Gutierrezes and to grant them asylum.
