Taxi industry disappointed in Mayor Tory's response: Still no commitment to enforce its own laws

TORONTO, July 3, 2015 /CNW/ - Members of Toronto's taxi industry expressed disappointment in Mayor Tory's response to their request that the City begin enforcing existing laws where Uber is concerned, which the Toronto Taxi Alliance considers an illegal bandit cab company.

"We put forward what we believe is a completely reasonable request," says Gail Souter, President of the Toronto Taxi Alliance. "We asked that the City enforce its own licensing by-laws, and that the police enforce the Highway Traffic Act where Uber is concerned, as they enforce these rules in our industry and with every other driver on the road.

"Rather than make any commitment to actually enforce the City's own laws, John Tory avoided providing any explanation as to why there are two completely different sets of rules for drivers who carry paying passengers, one the City makes up for the taxi industry ? and one that Uber makes up for themselves. What a disappointment."
