Dr. Don Worth releases 'Good News, Bad News, Who Can Tell?'

New book shares lessons of the pandemic through poetry and stories by 18 people from India and the US with space to list the lessons learned

WESTON, W.Va., Dec. 1, 2022 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- As a psychologist in rural West Virginia during the pandemic, Don Worth, Ph.D. was surprised that many of his patients got better during the stay-at-home orders, and yet when restrictions were lifted, they drifted back to old routines and their symptoms worsened. He wanted to offer an opportunity to identify the lessons of those times, behaviors and practices that were making people well despite circumstances and apply this wisdom now and especially when engaged in difficulties, in order to foster growth and wellness.

"Good News, Bad News, Who Can Tell? The Pandemic Reveals Wisdom" (published by Archway Publishing) offers a variety of touching stories, lyrics, and poems written by people who represent nine categories of those on the frontlines of the pandemic (educators, COVID-19 survivors, artists, clergy, those who lost loved ones, students, physicians, restauranteurs, and journalists) from the U.S. and India, regarding experiences, lessons and wisdom they acquired. Several names may be recognizable as people from the area.

A novel interpretation of the parable is presented as well as a framing (a figure 8) that provides some perspective and guidance as people move through the various trials and tribulations of life, and through challenges of mental illness and substance use. This book also includes a chapter titled "Signs of the Times" which highlights a variety of creative and amusing signs during the pandemic. Even some clever bathroom signs. The summary outlines lessons learned and wisdom gained by Dr. Worth from struggling through the pandemic in rural West Virginia, as a psychotherapist on the frontlines, and from reading the heartfelt stories and poems in the book.

"My hope is that your perspective and experience of life during the pandemic will be expanded to include ours, and that we can collect a library of lessons learned and wisdom gleaned that can inform our present and future, while offering a roadmap for life, learned from the sacrifices of so many. Space is provided for you to record the wisdom you acquired, your reflections and observations, list hard-earned lessons you learned and from no other way, identify contributors to your wellness and practices you wish to implement or maintain, and even space for your creative expressions by poem, story, or photography," Dr. Worth says.

When asked what he wants readers to take away from the book, Dr. Worth answers, "An opportunity to reflect on their own experiences and wisdom gleaned during the pandemic. To expand their perspective from reading the wholehearted expressions of a vast variety of folks like us. To gain new wisdom and tools in order to grow through other challenges. To simply be entertained and amazed by the strength of the human spirit."
