Bioidenticals Are a Breakthrough in the Treatment of Menopause

New hormone replacement therapies are changing the lives of menopausal women. The new treatments provide health benefits without the risks of cancer and blood clots that come with old formulations. Why don't more people know about them?

CLEARWATER, Fla., Nov. 28, 2022 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- For two decades, women and their doctors have shied away from hormone replacement to erase menopause symptoms. Now-outdated research warned of increased cancer risk from hormone replacement therapy. As a result, a generation of women struggled through menopause without effective treatment to manage their physical and emotional symptoms. Today, new scientific data and bioidentical hormone treatment are changing the landscape for menopause treatment. "We know things now about hormone replacement that we didn't fully understand 20 years ago," says Cynthia Elliott, M.D., owner and primary practitioner of Skinspirations, a cosmetic and regenerative medical practice. She adds, "New information and new hormone treatments mean the benefits of hormone replacement outweigh the risks."

For decades, scientists and doctors have known that hormone replacement therapy can reduce or eliminate menopause symptoms. However, the practice went out of favor after a 2002 study showed that women who took a combination of estrogen and progestin had an increased risk of breast cancer, heart attacks, stroke, and blood clots.(1) In the 20 years since, researchers learned more about the relationship between hormone replacement therapy and overall health. New data shows fewer risks than initially feared and many more benefits to women's health and quality of life during menopause.

In light of the new data, doctors are now again prescribing FDA-approved hormone replacement for women during menopause. Women benefit from new formulations of naturally derived bioidentical hormones. In addition, doctors see benefits from prescribing compounded hormone therapies with dosages customized for each patient.(2)

"Some regulators have questions about the safety and efficacy of compounded hormone treatments," Dr. Elliott notes, "but doctors and patients already know how well they work. Bioidentical hormones are lab-made, but they are identical to the ones your body makes naturally. They're easily absorbed, and compounded dosing ensures that treatment is appropriate for each patient. It's personalized medicine for menopause treatment."

Physicians like Dr. Elliott believe that bioidentical hormone therapies and custom dosing represent a breakthrough in the treatment of menopause. When overseen by an experienced doctor, these new hormone treatments can be an important part of a holistic approach to managing health through menopause. "My patients come to me for support during a new phase of life." Dr. Elliott explains, "They want to look better, and they want to feel better. Hormone replacement is one effective way of achieving their wellness goals."

Dr. Elliott's practice is adding hormone replacement therapy to its list of comprehensive antiaging services in late 2022. In addition to treatment for menopause symptoms, patients can receive aesthetic services, body contouring treatments, and regenerative treatments for musculoskeletal conditions.
