Breakthrough Medical Advance Known as the PossoverTM LION Procedure Helps Paraplegics Walk Again and Gives Hope to Many More

Possover International Medical Center:

WHAT:

A revolutionary new medical advance called the PossoverTM LION Procedure is helping improve the mobility and quality of life for paraplegic and quadriplegic spinal cord injury victims allowing them to regain voluntary movement of their lower extremities. With millions of people living with paralysis in the U.S., this gives tremendous hope to many people living very restrictive and painful lives.

Studies show low frequency pelvic nerve stimulation promotes growth and potential reconnection of nerve fibers. The PossoverTM LION (Laparoscopic Implantation of Neuroprosthesis) procedure involves minimally invasive implantation of electrodes on specific pelvic nerves for targeted electrical stimulation. After the procedure, patients showed a rapid and significant improvement in bone density and noticeable muscle development ? not only in the legs, but also in the upper body. Both factors are prerequisites for paraplegics to stand up safely without risking bone fractures.

WHO:

Professor Marc Possover, MD, is world-renowned for his research, academic and clinical contributions in the fields of gynecologic oncology, surgical endometriosis treatment, and is the inventor and pioneer of a new medical field called Neuropelveology. After years of cross-discipline clinical research, Dr. Possover created the LION procedure to help people who suffer from pelvic nerve pain and had little to no chance of functional recovery.

Dr. Possover has received several awards from prestigious US medical associations honoring his expertise as well as commendations from medical experts at US institutions including: Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the Endometriosis Foundation of America (EndoFound).

WHY:

The catalyst for Dr. Possover's great interest in the pelvic nerve structures was a patient very close to him who suffered from massive and chronic pelvic pain. Since neurologists and neurosurgeons specialize in the treatment of nerve damage to the brain and spinal cord, there has been little development in the diagnosis and treatment of the pelvic nerves. "Neuropelveology" is a new discipline combining the fields of neurology, neurosurgery, gynecology and urology. It deals with information disorders of the nerves in the direction of the brain (sensory disturbance, pain) and with those that originate from the brain (bladder, bowel function and sexuality disorders up to loss of function or paraplegia).
