Arizona Non-Profit Honored at Greater Phoenix Urban League Annual Event

PHOENIX, Dec. 2, 2021 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The Greater Phoenix Urban League is excited to announce it will honor the HeroZona Foundation during the 57th annual Whitney M. Young, Jr. Awards on Thursday, December 2. Additional honorees include Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona, Michael M. Crow, President of Arizona State University, and Valley of the Sun United Way.

"We are very proud to honor and be able to give recognition to all these incredible honorees for the impact each has made in our community," said George Dean, Greater Phoenix Urban League President and CEO.

Whitney M. Young, Jr. was an American civil rights leader and Executive Director of the National Urban League. He spent most of his career working to end employment discrimination in the United States and turning the National Urban League into an organization that aggressively worked for equitable access to socioeconomic opportunity for the historically disenfranchised. Young served as President of the National Urban League until his death in 1971.

The award will be accepted by Alan "AP" Powell, who co-founded HeroZona and currently serves as chairman and CEO of AP & Associates, LLC, founded in 2004. The HeroZona Foundation is a non-profit that serves students and veterans by giving them access to educational opportunities to ensure they get to cross the 'finish line.' The foundation's programs include HeroZona's HeroPreneur National Veteran Business Summit, Veterans Reach to Teach, Phoenix Tools 4 Schools and the Bridge Forum. It was an instrumental organization in creating the largest COVID-19 testing site in 2020 and co-launching the OneCommunity Initiative, which focuses on reaching diverse, underserved communities, and aims to track demographic data to identify disparity gaps and ensure that the vaccines are distributed fairly and equitably.

"It's an honor to be recognized by the Greater Phoenix Urban League for this prestigious award," said Powell. "As Whitney M. Young, Jr. once said, 'where injustice reins, all are unequal,' and I am committed to continuing HeroZona's efforts to help underserved families in south Phoenix and surrounding communities receive the resources and opportunities necessary to lead fulfilling lives."
