Celebrating Cultural Diversity: Nissan Foundation Kicks off 2022 Grant Cycle

For nearly 30 years, the Nissan Foundation has supported organizations that promote the many benefits that diversity brings to our communities. As part of that commitment, the Foundation is accepting letters of intent for its 2022 grant cycle.

Each year, the Nissan Foundation awards grants to nonprofits that serve communities surrounding Nissan locations in Southern California, Middle Tennessee, Central Mississippi, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Southeast Michigan, New York City and Atlanta. Now in its 29th year, the foundation's mission is to support educational programs that help people see the world through multiple perspectives.

"Our grantees are doing the crucial work of promoting cultural understanding that leads to acceptance and appreciation of our differences," said Parul Bajaj, executive director, Nissan Foundation. "We are honored to support their efforts to create positive and meaningful change."

The Nissan Foundation was created in 1992 as a thoughtful response to three weeks of riots and civil unrest that occurred following the Rodney King trial verdict near the company's U.S. headquarters, then located in Gardena, California. Since that time, the Foundation has awarded more than $13 million to more than 150 nonprofit organizations offering educational programs that raise awareness of the various dimensions of diversity.

In June, the Nissan Foundation awarded grants to 28 nonprofits including the San Diego Museum of Us whose "Race: Are We So Different?" virtual workshops engage participants in feeling, thinking, acting, and reflecting on race and identity. Other 2021 grantees included the U.S. Committee for Refugees & Immigrants. Inc., the Jewish Children's Museum, the Global Education Center, the Foundation for Mississippi History and the Interfaith Leadership Council of Metro Detroit.

How to apply

The Nissan Foundation application process is conducted online to eliminate paper waste and align with Nissan's global mission to support a greener environment. All letters of intent must be received by Monday, November 1 at 5 p.m. ET. The Nissan Foundation will announce 2022 grantees in June 2022.
