Englewood Health Grows 400% Using Revenue Cycle Management Solution from athenahealth and CaduceusHealth

athenahealth, a leading provider of network-enabled software and services for medical groups and health systems nationwide, today announced that it joined forces with CaduceusHealth, a New Jersey-based managed services organization, to enable Englewood Health to expand its business four-fold, as well as make a rapid pivot to COVID-19 protocols. Englewood Health, one of New Jersey's leading hospitals and healthcare networks, is leveraging the two companies' integrated billing solution to improve real-time insight into revenue performance, increase collections, and enable providers to focus on delivering high-quality and sustainable care.

Using athenaCollector for revenue cycle management (RCM), along with CaduceusHealth's technology that includes robust reporting capabilities, Englewood can offer easy remote management and user-friendly interfaces for real-time, always-on insight into the performance of its physician network. This allows Englewood's providers and leadership to assess daily operations and monthly trends and pinpoint areas that need optimization; it has also enabled Englewood Health to grow from $30 million to $120 million in annual collections, and from 50 to more than 500 providers, between 2011 and 2020.

"Revenue performance is top of mind for practices across the country as they look for ways to enhance efficiencies and their bottom line to secure their futures, especially due to the financial implications of the COVID-19 pandemic," said Bret Connor, chief customer officer, athenahealth. "Through our robust and seamless technology, we are proud to help networks like Englewood sustain long-term business growth by improving RCM integration across locations, providing real-time visibility into financial data, and enabling them to effectively collect patient pay responsibilities."

Additionally, athenahealth's Billing Rules Engine, which proactively scans claims to catch errors before they are submitted, has enabled Englewood to ensure its claims are as complete and accurate as possible, significantly reducing denials and improving first-pass resolution rates. Together, athenahealth and Caduceus have given Englewood's staff the data visibility they need to advise patients what they owe before they arrive for a visit and then collect the appropriate amount. This has resulted in patient self-pay changing from Englewood's eighth-largest revenue source to its third-largest, behind only Medicare and Blue Cross. When looking at the same set of providers year over year, Englewood saw an 18% increase in collections.

"When we began thinking about expanding our network, we knew we needed to identify the right business and technology partners that aligned with our mission to sustain and bolster our growth," said Dr. Stephen Brunnquell, President of Englewood Health Physician Partners. "From day one of our partnership, athenahealth and Caduceus have provided us with RCM support that includes valuable technology and data and that is better than outsourcing. They have helped us centralize our network's approach, support our team members on the front lines, and strengthen our financial outlook. As we look to pursue ventures with new groups and expand access to care, we depend on the insight and support of athenahealth and Caduceus to ensure every new practice is a seamless onboard."

Most recently during the COVID-19 pandemic, athenahealth and Caduceus helped Englewood quickly and seamlessly scale its telehealth offering from three to 45 service department practices in five days. Through the partnership, the organizations also implemented a remote patient payment application, allowing text-to-pay from a patient's phone, which fully integrates with athenahealth's credit card processing functionality. athenahealth and Caduceus were able to keep Englewood's revenue stable in March and reported it only decreased by 10% in April (compared to April 2019), during the peak of stay-at-home directives. Due to its ability to maintain incoming revenue and efficient billing processes during the pandemic, Englewood is in a strong financial position to move forward with its long-term growth plans.
