Mother Pigs Caged in Crates, Kicked and Beaten, Suffering from Open Wounds ? Undercover Investigations Will Soon Be Illegal in Ontario and Beyond Due to New Provincial "Ag Gag" Laws
TORONTO, Nov. 29, 2020 /CNW/ - Shocking hidden-camera video of animal abuse secretly recorded at an Ontario pig breeding farm has been released by the animal law advocacy organization Animal Justice. The video, narrated by singer Jann Arden, reveals mother pigs forcibly-impregnated over and over again, caged in cramped gestation crates so small they cannot even turn around, and violently kicked and beaten by workers. Piglets had their tails and testes sliced off without pain relief.
Ontario recently passed agricultural gag laws ("ag gag") to help the meat industry cover up cruelty. It will soon be illegal to go undercover at a farm or slaughterhouse to expose animal suffering, workplace safety, or health concerns. This will likely be the last legal hidden-camera exposé in Ontario before the law comes into effect. Alberta passed a similar law last year, and Manitoba, Quebec, and PEI are considering ag gag laws.
Camille Labchuk, lawyer executive director of Animal Justice, will speak about the footage and the rise of dangerous ag gag laws at an online news conference tomorrow.
