Media Advisory - Stop Bill 195: Hospital Nurses to Join in Ottawa Protest

OTTAWA, ON, July 16, 2020 /CNW/ - Front-line registered nurses, nurse practitioners, registered practical nurses and health-care professionals from three sites of The Ottawa Hospital will rally in solidarity with members of CUPE and OPSEU. The workers are calling on the province to stop 195 ? legislation that gives the provincial government broad powers to override collective agreements.

The Ontario Nurses' Association (ONA) members will rally in front of The Ottawa Hospital's General, Civic and Riverside sites on Friday from 11:30 to 1:30.

Bill 195, if passed, would allow the government to extend powers that may override existing legislation, regulations, by-laws and connective agreements, including those negotiated by nurses and health-care professionals. At a time when Ontario nurses and health-care professionals have put themselves at risk to care for patients during the COVID-19 pandemic, the spectre of government having indefinite power to close hospitals, redeploy and reassign staff at will, cancel leaves and vacation time and more is unacceptable.

ONA is the union representing more than 68,000 registered nurses and health-care professionals, as well as 18,000 nursing student affiliates, providing care in hospitals, long-term care facilities, public health, the community, clinics and industry.
