NACDD Calls for Increased Voting Accessibility During National Disability Voter Registration Week

WASHINGTON, July 13, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, as National Disability Voter Registration Week begins, the National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities (NACDD) called for states to increase accessibility for voters with developmental disabilities. As part of this call to action, we have launched a new hub for voter information at onevotenow.org so that everyone can exercise their constitutional right to vote.

As part of National Disability Voter Registration Week, NACDD will also be hosting a Facebook Live event on Thursday, July 16 at 2 p.m. ET on the importance of voting with Donna Meltzer, CEO of NACDD, and Emily Kranking, NACDD consultant, actress (Best Summer Ever), and disability rights advocate.

"Our democracy is strongest when every voice can be heard," said Donna Meltzer, CEO of NACDD. "More work needs to be done to ensure that every voter can cast a ballot that is counted, and we are here to make sure that the needs of people with developmental disabilities are accounted for in the general election."

OneVoteNow, which is made possible by a grant from Craigslist Founder Craig Newmark through the Craig Newmark Philanthropies, is a central hub to find information about how to vote in the 2020 election. Structural barriers have historically made it more difficult for the disability community to vote. To make voting more accessible, NACDD gathers and shares information about participating in the election. The website provides the tools to ensure that everyone can cast their ballot by helping users register to vote and to make a plan to vote in person or by mail.

"It is extremely important that everyone has an equal right to vote," said Kranking. "And it's especially important right now to have voting accessible during this time of COVID-19. I'm so honored to be part of a movement that focuses on voters with disabilities, who might need some help to navigate the process."
