National Police Support Fund Releases Statement Rebuking Early Prisoner Releases Due to COVID-19

ALEXANDRIA, Va., June 19, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- National Police Support Fund, a political grassroots organization, released a statement today formally condemning local decisions to release prisoners early due to the coronavirus pandemic. As the number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 within prisons and jails continues to rise, correctional facilities are releasing incarcerated people early to reduce the size of their populations. However, cities across the nation are reporting huge increase in crime, including violent crime, since the pandemic started. National Police Support Fund and other police organizations are concerned that this unprecedented release will continue to exacerbate increased crime rates and put officers in danger.

Making rash decision without facts and without comprehensive plans will inevitably lead to an increase of infections and, if released an increase in the risk to the safety of citizens around the nation," Executive Director Simon Lewis said in a statement.
