Systemic Discrimination Against Indigenous People: The Ball is in François Legault's Court

WENDAKE, QC, June 15, 2020 /CNW Telbec/ - In response to the Legault government's proposal to hold yet another consultation, the AFNQL suggests instead that Premier Legault quickly propose to First Nations the concrete measures he intends to take in response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) and the Viens Commission. Once the Legault government has finally done its homework, the AFNQL will be ready to sit down with its emissaries and examine what concrete measures could be taken quickly to counter the unacceptable plague of systemic discrimination against First Nations.

"Proposing another consultation seems to me to be redundant to say the least and could well be considered unacceptable by a large part of the First Nations population, already too often consulted and still waiting for concrete measures," says AFNQL Chief Ghislain Picard.

Both the Legault government, following the Viens Commission, and the federal government, following the tabling of the MMIWG report, have committed to acting on what these inquiries have revealed. The First Nations population is still waiting. According to the AFNQL, the governments have before them enough concrete proposals to begin to commit themselves in the face of situations that are intolerable. A lot of time, energy and disappointment would be saved if we finally knew what the governments, and in particular the Legault government, intend to put forward.

Faced with these proposals, the AFNQL would be able to react quickly and contribute to finally putting in place what is sorely lacking, namely equity in social relations.
