ACGME Announces New Diversity and Inclusion Award


CHICAGO, May 18, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- The ACGME is proud to announce its Diversity and Inclusion Award, a new recognition to support efforts to achieve diversity and inclusion in graduate medical education (GME). The award will recognize ACGME-accredited Sponsoring Institutions and programs, and specialty organizations working to diversify the underrepresented physician workforce and create inclusive workplaces that foster humane, civil, and equitable environments.

"Eliminating health disparities requires a commitment from all?even, and especially, during times of crisis," said ACGME Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer William A. McDade, MD, PhD. "With the launch of this annual award, the ACGME will shine a light on the most innovative and exemplary initiatives that drive diversity and inclusion in GME."

The award will recognize:

Award winners will be publicly honored for their achievement at the ACGME Annual Educational Conference. They will receive a commemorative plaque and be included in an award display in the ACGME office. Each Diversity and Inclusion awardee, as well as one guest per awardee, will receive travel to the Annual Educational Conference and accommodations paid for by the ACGME. Conference registration will be waived.

The deadline for nomination applications for the inaugural 2021 ACGME Diversity and Inclusion Award is July 17, 2020 at 5:00 p.m. Central.

The ACGME is a private, non-profit, professional organization responsible for the accreditation of approximately 11,700 residency and fellowship programs and the approximately 850 institutions that sponsor these programs in the United States. Residency and fellowship programs educate approximately 140,500 resident and fellow physicians in 181 specialties and subspecialties. The ACGME's mission is to improve health care and population health by assessing and advancing the quality of resident physicians' education through accreditation.
