Asian Americans in Texas Condemn Kathaleen Wall's Dirty and Reckless Campaign Tactics

WASHINGTON, April 8, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, United Chinese Americans (UCA) condemns the cynical and reckless campaign tactics deployed by Ms Kathaleen Wall, candidate for Texas Congressional district 22.

"Playing race card and dirty politics with Asian Americans is not acceptable anymore. I have a single message to Ms Wall: Do not tread on us!" says Haipei Shue, President of UCA.

Asian Americans in Texas are unanimous and swift in condemning Ms Wall for her reckless campaign advertisement. They issued a letter to RNC and DNC chairs today asking them to rein in hurtful and xenophobic rhetoric of Chinese virus. Many in the community are sending letters of denouncement to Ms Wall, others are preparing a full page newspaper ad denouncing her.

Following is one of the two letters circulating now

Dear Ms. Wall:

Shame on you.

Asian Americans throughout Greater Houston and all over Texas condemn your reckless and irresponsible television ad attacking Asian American communities.

While you may argue your ad only targets China, it is in fact just a tired xenophobic and racist trope that Asian Americans have endured since there were Asian Americans. Our community members, no matter how many generations their family has been here, no matter how successful they are, or no matter how perfect their English may be, they are still treated as foreign, aliens, or never being American enough.

Even worse, your ad puts a target on the backs of anyone who looks vaguely Asian, subjecting them to the threat of physical harm. We have already seen assaults against Asian Americans increase across the nation, during this pandemic.

During this crisis, Asian Americans across the state have stepped up big time. We are many of the doctors and nurses on the front lines. Our community has scrambled to raise funds to help first responders and medical staff. Instead of helping, you cynically resort to rhetoric stoking xenophobia and racism.

Asian Americans are Americans. What unites us is we are immensely proud of being Americans. You should have learned this while running for a district that includes one of the largest Asian American populations in the nation.

We demand that you withdraw your ad and apologize. We also call on all elected officials, especially Republican officials in Texas and on the Republican National Committee, to join us in denouncing your racist campaign tactics.
