Statement - Working Together to Fight COVID-19

TORONTO, April 3, 2020 /CNW/ - The Ontario Medical Association (OMA) is working closely with the Ministry of Health and other health care providers to contain the virus, protect patients, doctors and other health care workers so that we remain on the low side of today's projections.

"The projections released today are disturbing, no doubt," said Dr. Sohail Gandhi, OMA President. "They emphasize how critical each individual step we take is.  To prevent the spread of COVID-19, please STAY HOME and avoid physical contact with others. Keep your distance and wash your hands often with soap and water."

These statistics also highlight the desperate need to immediately distribute protective personal equipment and critical supplies to all front-line health-care workers in hospitals, clinics, and long-term care facilities.   Doctors and all health sector workers ? everyone who may encounter a patient or member of the public who has been exposed to COVID-19 ? needs and deserves to have appropriate protective equipment. We need action NOW to protect against the experience seen in Italy, and other countries and states around the world.

"It is vital that health care providers stay healthy to provide care to those who may be contract the virus in the future, but also to ensure that we are able to continue to effectively care for patients who have other acute health care needs," added Dr. Gandhi.

The OMA is working closely with the province on a broad range of issues to ensure that doctors and other health care providers are able to work safely and continue to provide care to patients during the current crisis.

The OMA thanks the government for their leadership, daily work and transparency and for considering Ontario's doctors in their decision-making.
