QUÉBEC CITY, April 1, 2020 /CNW Telbec/ - The gouvernement du Québec wishes to inform the public that, starting at noon on April 1, additional checkpoints will be deployed in and around four new regions. This measure is in response to directives from the Direction de la santé publique and is intended to limit non-essential travel and thus protect the population from COVID 19.
A public health order will now be in effect for the following regions and territories:
the Outaouais health region
the territories of the regional county municipalities of Antoine-Labelle, Argenteuil, Les-Pays-d'en-Haut and Les Laurentides for the Laurentides health region
the territories of the regional county municipalities of Autray, Joliette, Matawinie, and Montcalm for the Lanaudière health region
the territory of the urban agglomeration of La Tuque for the Mauricie et Centre-du-Québec health region
The Sûreté du Québec is working closely with the Service de police de la Ville de Gatineau and the Service de sécurité publique de la MRC des Collines-de-l'Outaouais to put in place common measures to limit travel that will be controlled on a selective basis by police forces.
It should be noted that the measures introduced do not apply to activities enabling health care and health services to be obtained and provided, nor do they apply to activities providing humanitarian support and essential services for the continuity of the supply chain in all regions of Québec. By restricting entry and exit in this way, public health authorities believe they can further limit and prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Highlights
On March 28, everyone was asked to avoid traveling from one region to another or from one community to another, except when necessary.
Travel should be limited to medical and work-related reasons in a context where telework is not possible.
The regions and territories covered by the March 28 announcement are as follows:
Bas-Saint-Laurent
Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean
Abitibi-Témiscamingue
Côte-Nord
Nord-du-Québec
Gaspésie-Îles-de-la-Madeleine
Nunavik
Terres-Cries-de-la-Baie-James
At the borders of Ontario and Abitibi, checkpoints have been set up to limit travel for this region of Québec, which is currently under lockdown.
Checkpoints are also in place between Québec and New Brunswick and between Québec and Newfoundland and Labrador.
Roadside checks are being conducted at various strategic locations along the U.S. border to inform travellers, mainly from the United States, of current government measures.
