Athens Insurance Services, Inc. Notifies Individuals, Offers Protection Following Phishing Attack

CONCORD, Calif., March 30, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- Athens Insurance Services, Inc. ("Athens") leaders announced today that they are investigating a potential incident that may have affected their customers. On or around September 17, 2019, Athens became aware of a potential compromise to one (1) employee email account. Athens immediately took actionable steps to secure the affected account. Further, Athens engaged an expert forensic company to investigate the cause and scope of the incident. It was ultimately determined that one (1) email account experienced unauthorized access between July 1, 2019 and September 17, 2019. On January 22, 2020, after thorough investigation, Athens determined that the unauthorized access may have allowed access to individuals' personal information. The information contained within the affected mailbox includes some combination of Social Security number, date of birth, student identification number, driver's license number, passport number, financial account number, username and password, personal health information and medical information. Athens has worked diligently to obtain sufficient contact information to provide individual notification. Notably, there is no indication that any information potentially accessed was misused during this incident.

Athens has identified no evidence that any sensitive information was accessed, viewed or downloaded, however, such actions cannot be ruled out. Therefore, out of an abundance of caution and so that affected individuals may diligently monitor their accounts, Athens is providing free credit monitoring to those individuals whose information was potentially accessed. Athens takes privacy very seriously and has established stringent protocols to ensure individuals' information remain private. Athens has taken every step necessary to address the incident, including implementing additional safeguards to ensure this incident will not be repeated.

Athens recommends patients remain vigilant in regularly reviewing and monitoring all account statements and credit history to guard against any unauthorized transactions or activity.
