Pest Control Company Launches Petition to Use EPA-approved Disinfectant for Fighting COVID-19

IRVINE, Calif., March 26, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- On March 13, 2020, the EPA listed the pest control disinfectant DSV (Disinfectant, Sanitizer, Virucide) in their List N, determining the solution meets criteria for use against SARS-CoV-2, the novel coronavirus that causes the disease COVID-19. DSV has been used by many pest control companies throughout California for years as a bio cleanup disinfectant when clearing areas infested with disease-bearing pests such as rodents and roaches. In light of the pandemic, Accurate Termite and Pest Control has launched an online petition seeking a temporary lift on the ban, allowing DSV to be used on a larger scale.

Despite the recent confirmation from the EPA that DSV is effective at targeting COVID-19, using DSV for the sole purpose of disinfecting and cleaning against COVID-19 is outside the scope of licensing for pest control. Therefore, the Structural Pest Control Board of California is refusing to allow pest control applicators temporary permission to perform disinfecting procedures using this chemical, unless it is ancillary to cleaning and sanitizing from a disease-bearing pest infestation.

DSV by Nisus is a concentrated disinfectant, cleaner, fungicide and sanitizer commonly used in the pest control industry to kill viruses like hantavirus, e.coli, hepatitis B and C, avian flu, staph, strep and many other viruses and bacteria. Large-scale disinfection services using DSV are currently being deployed in hospitals and clinics.

"Thousands of licensed pest control operators throughout California could be mobilized to perform large-scale disinfections in critical areas to protect the most vulnerable and help prevent the spread of COVID19," said Isaac Camacho, marketing and sales director for Accurate Termite and Pest Control. "These are extraordinary times that require extraordinary measures to help reduce and minimize the effect of this health and economic crisis."

DSV, which contains the active ingredient quaternary ammonium, is registered as EPA number 10324-80 under the product name MAQUAT 5.5-M and marketed as DSV by Nisus. The deadline for petition signatures is Monday, April 6, 2020. The deadline for petition signatures is Monday, April 6, 2020.
