PIJAC Canada Urges Government to Allow Pet Stores to Remain Open

OTTAWA, March 17, 2020 /CNW/ - As the world is battling an unprecedented situation, the Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council of Canada (PIJAC Canada) is extremely concerned by the threat to human health that COVID-19 imposes. The association firmly believes that animal welfare is everyone's business. During these trying times, we are urging pet supply businesses to continue their good work to help maintain the well-being of Canada's pets and for government authorities to allow them to do so.

"It is vital that pet industry businesses are able to continue to provide products and services for the care of pets and that they are included among the critical infrastructure that is allowed to remain open throughout this unprecedented crisis." Craig Brummell, PIJAC Canada board Chairman.

The pet population in Canada is approximately 19 million strong between cats, dogs, small mammals, birds, reptiles and fish. Pet stores supply nearly one-third of all dog and cat food needed in pet family's homes. This number sees a further increase when we include the food required by smaller pets like small mammals, reptiles and fish. Mass grocery stores do sell a limited variety of basic pet food options; however, they do not generally offer specialized food, supplements or medications that Canadian pets may need to stay healthy. It goes without saying that they are also not set up logistically to serve the millions of pets living in Canadian households.

The association has written an open letter to the industry, public and government about this situation.  Retail stores larger and small from across the country have signed and are continuing to sign on to this letter showing their support and willingness to do what needs to be done to keep Canada's pets healthy.

PIJAC Canada is national non-profit dedicated to ensuring the highest level of pet care and equitable representing all facets of the industry. Their mission is to offer guidance and resources to pet businesses and help advance the well being of Canada's animals. As a not for profit, they represent over 1500 members coast to coast and believe working together is the key to positive pet experiences and successful pet businesses.
