CVCC Partners with Legacy Educational Center Aimed at the Reduction of Poverty in Lynchburg

LYNCHBURG, Va., March 5, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Central Virginia Community College and the nonprofit Legacy Educational Center have inked an agreement to begin an educational pilot program assisting individuals with wrap-around services to improve gainful career employment outcomes. The program, "Pathway to Gainful Careers," will recruit, interview, and select 25 participants for the inaugural 2020 fall semester class. Randy Dunton, Executive Director of Legacy Educational Center, said, "Our Pathway to Gainful Careers program is designed to provide Opportunity and Advantage to students. The combination of accredited academics, life skills education, and career development assistance funds will broaden the bridge for success in our mission to Educate Economic Empowerment." The program will operate within the redevelopment offices and classrooms at 1222 Rivermont Ave.

Dr. Hezteine Foster highlighted her role as Legacy Educational Center Director of Academics, "The students will have specific individualized academic support measures with structured accountability to better position them for mastery of the CVCC degree progressions. My main objective is for each student to be served by intentional resources to equip them for success."

The academic calendar will coincide with CVCC's traditional fall and spring semesters. Dunton said, "Our Executive Committee saw the need for change in our community. Too many talented and gifted students are falling short of their God-given potential due to barriers, distractions and hurdles systemic with poverty. It is time to look at an old problem in new ways. We firmly believe this program will give students the opportunity and advantage through LEC's wrap-around support they currently lack to achieve their dreams with economic success." Dr. John Capps, President of Central Virginia Community College, said, "CVCC is the point of entry to the American dream. Through our partnership with Legacy Educational Center, we will be able to extend access and opportunity to even more students, changing the course of their lives and enriching the entire Lynchburg community." Legacy Executive Committee is so thankful for the collaboration with Central Virginia Community College and President, Dr. John Capps. Dunton said, "CVCC has a leader, who is not only a visionary but also an advocate for students. This opportunity to prioritize simplicity in the student's daily execution of advancing with their academics without compromising the experience, I believe, will be one of the innovative leadership initiatives of Dr. Capps' Administration that this community comes to highly value and appreciate."
