Arlington Court Legionnaires' Outbreak ? Were Residents Properly Notified?

The Franklin County Health Department confirmed that legionella bacteria was present in water samples taken from the facility since February 11thArlington Court says the facility has been working with the health department to implement water restrictions, including the placement of special filters in showers, bathrooms, ice machines, the kitchen, and visitor areas. Despite ongoing water restrictions and claims that the facility notified residents, the family of one of the victims, who was admitted in the end of February, told local news that they were not told about the problem prior to check-in.

What is Legionnaires' Disease?

Legionnaires' disease is a severe and sometimes fatal form of pneumonia that people can get when they breathe in mist or vapor containing legionella bacteria. Legionella bacteria thrive in warm and stagnant water, which is why outbreaks are frequently associated with complex plumbing systems at healthcare facilities, including nursing homes and hospitals. Adults over the age of 50 and people with weakened immune systems are at higher risk for infection.
