Dr. Philip Berger joins PathSensors, Inc. Scientific Advisory Board

BALTIMORE, Dec. 11, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- PathSensors, Inc. announced today that Dr. Philip Berger has joined its Scientific Advisory Board. Dr. Berger retired from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) last December, where he served for 11 years as the Executive Director of the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) Plant Protection and Quarantine (PPQ), Science and Technology. The USDA APHIS PPQ program helps protect agriculture and natural resources in the United States by preventing the entry and spread of pests and pathogens that could result in economic and environmental damage.

As Executive Director, Dr. Berger led overall scientific support for PPQ programs, policies and actions and served as a member of the PPQ Management Team. Dr. Berger served in the PPQ program since 2003 when he became the program's National Science Program Leader for Molecular Diagnostics and Biotechnology.

Dr. Berger received his B.A. and M.S. from the University of Minnesota, before receiving a Ph.D. in Plant Pathology from Texas A&M University. He was a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Kentucky before joining the faculty at the University of Idaho, where he served as the Chair of the Plant Pathology Division and Associate Director of the Idaho Experiment Station prior to joining USDA APHIS.

Dr. Berger has made key contributions to PPQ to advance pathogen detection technologies which improve regulatory decision making. "High quality, well-validated diagnostic techniques are integral to plant health and safety," commented Dr. Berger. "Diagnostic tools are crucial to making informed regulatory decisions to help stop the spread of pathogens as quickly as possible."

"PathSensors is honored to be working closely with Dr. Berger, further expanding CANARY products into agricultural pathogen detection," said PathSensors' President, Ted Olsen. "We look forward to his advice, counsel, and expertise in solving critical problems facing the agriculture industry."
