Seaside Vacations Volunteers For Hatteras Island Clean-Up

KITTY HAWK, N.C., Oct. 2, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- After Hurricane Dorian left a path of destruction in the Bahamas, it swept up the East Coast directly over the barrier islands of the Outer Banks. Although the northern towns escaped mostly unscathed, communities in the southern islands of the Outer Banks were left devastated. In particular, Ocracoke Island and Hatteras Island were bombarded with high winds and storm surge resulting in historic flooding.

Dare County estimates that over 1,200 residential, commercial and public structures were affected by the storm resulting in damages expected to exceed $14,000,000. Damages on Ocracoke Island, which is part of Hyde County, were even worse and the island still remains closed to visitors as crews work hard to repair everything from homes to businesses to infrastructure. Despite the hard hit, Outer Banks residents are resilient and have already started to rebuild their lives with the help of the local community and generous visitors.

As part of Seaside Vacations "Seaside Cares" Initiative, the company was eager to help and quickly established a recovery team made up of several Seaside employees, including company president Gordon Jones. "Seeing a need and doing what you can to help give your neighbors a boost is what it means to be part of the Outer Banks community. This isn't our first storm recovery trip and it won't be the last," explains Seaside Vacations Chief Operations Officer Lori Smith who both organized and participated on the recovery team. "I hope other businesses see us out there and it inspires them to send volunteers too."

Once the Seaside team arrived on Hatteras Island, they were assigned to the Frisco area for clean-up. Throughout the day, the employees assisted local homeowners and businesses with debris removal, garage clean-up, siding repair, roof inspections, and mold prevention.

"We are very proud of our team," says Smith. "All of our storm recovery trips are completely voluntary and we are incredibly grateful to have people in our office who step up and give back to the community. This is what being an Outer Banker is about and community is at the center of our culture here at Seaside."

Although it's been a few weeks since Hurricane Dorian, recovery is only just beginning and since many families lost their homes and businesses, financial assistance is greatly appreciated. To donate to disaster relief efforts, please visit the Outer Banks Community Foundation at https://www.obcf.org/donate-now/disaster-relief-fund-donate/. Your tax-deductible gift can be designated to go towards relief in Dare County, Ocracoke County or split 50/50 between the two areas.
