The "Peer Exchange" will begin with an in-depth overview of SCD that defines the difference between sickle cell trait and SCD, as well as the genetic predisposition of SCD. Current treatment options for patients with SCD will be discussed, including the role of hydroxyurea in the pathophysiology of SCD, the mechanism of action of L-glutamine in treating SCD, blood transfusion therapy and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Challenges in the management of SCD will also be shared from a multitude of perspectives. Finally, a review of the emerging agents will be presented.
