CAN Fund announces a $3 million matching donation by philanthropic leaders Eric and Vizma Sprott

The record-breaking personal commitment will support hundreds of Canadian athletes who compete for Canada

TORONTO, July 23, 2019 /CNW/ - In anticipation of next year's Summer Games, Canadian Athletes Now Fund (CAN Fund) is charging forward on its mission to provide financial support to athletes representing Canada. One year and one day out from the Games, the renowned non-profit organization is honoured to announce a $3 million matching donation by Eric and Vizma Sprott, longstanding supporters of the charity. This historic announcement marks the largest personal donation to Canadian athletes. Recognizing that every day counts for Canadian athletes on their journey, CAN Fund provides recipients with the opportunity to focus on success, instead of unnecessary financial hurdles.

"The effort of athletes and their families should be supported," said Eric & Vizma Sprott. "There is nothing more personally satisfying than to see Canadian athletes competing successfully in international competitions. Good luck to Canada."

As a leader in direct funding for Canadian athletes, CAN Fund exists to engage Canadians to be part of the athlete's journey when the support is needed the most: the years when no one is watching or cheering as our athletes courageously pursue their dreams. Able-bodied and Paralympic athletes are eligible for $6,000 up to twice a year. Donations help fill the significant financial gap most athletes are faced with, contributing to costs for equipment, coaching, travel, team fees, proper nutrition and living expenses. With every donation, donors find out the name of the athlete supported and receive a tax receipt. For more information on how to donate, click here.

Since 2003, CAN Fund has raised over $40 million and has proudly supported 80 per cent of the Canadian athletes at every Games from 2004 to 2018.

"I started the Fund from a hospital bed at Toronto Western with the idea that I could help a few athletes compete for Canada," said Jane Roos, CAN Fund Founder.  "Now because of Eric and Vizma Sprott, we have the opportunity to raise $6 million and support athletes beyond next summer. Timing is everything, this is the tipping point our athletes need."
