Canada and Japan Announce Clean Energy Cooperation at G20

KARUIZAWA, Japan, June 17, 2019 /CNW/ - International clean energy collaboration and innovation through the G20 will provide the world with clean, affordable and reliable energy sources. Canada is poised to take a leadership role in the global energy transition currently underway.

Paul Lefebvre, Parliamentary Secretary to Canada's Minister of Natural Resources, on behalf of Canada's Minister of Natural Resources, the Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, announced the signing of two Memoranda of Understanding (MOU) on clean energy cooperation with Japan following the successful G20 Energy Transitions and Global Environment for Sustainable Growth Ministerial Meeting, held from June 15 to 16 in Karuizawa, Japan.

This G20 Ministerial meeting was a historic first, which jointly discussed energy and the environment, reinforcing the important relationship between the environment and our shared clean energy future.

Building on past collaboration, the first MOU commits Natural Resources Canada and Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry to advance cooperation in the areas of clean energy, energy efficiency, oil and gas and to accelerate action on climate change in multilateral fora.

The second commits Natural Resources Canada and the Japan Coal Energy Center to work together on clean energy, including carbon capture utilization and storage technologies.

Canada's contribution to the G20 builds on the momentum created from hosting the 10th Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) and 4th Mission Innovation (MI) Ministerial in Vancouver, B.C., last month and its successful 2018 G7 Presidency. At the G20 Ministerial, Canada seized the opportunity to:

Most importantly, the outcomes of this G20 meeting support Canada's vision for a clean energy future.

Canada is committed to supporting clean energy initiatives that create jobs, support investment and strengthen industry competitiveness to advance its clean energy future and help realize its global climate change goals.
