FirstService Residential Continues Commitment to Reduce Environmental Footprint by Aiming for Top Participation in 2019 Daylight Hour

DANIA BEACH, Fla., June 14, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- FirstService Residential, North America's property management leader, is encouraging its offices to participate in the fifth annual Daylight Hour global event and reduce their carbon footprints by shutting down lights from noon to 1 p.m. on Friday, June 21, 2019. To mark the occasion, the property management company is aiming for a Daylight Hour first: full, company-wide participation.

FirstService Residential has consistently laid claim to the "Jetsetter Award" for top participation in the Daylight Hour event since it launched in 2014. Last year was the company's best showing yet, involving 70 offices in 54 cities across the U.S. and Canada.

The Daylight Hour initiative was created by The Building Energy Exchange nonprofit to illustrate how small changes, such as disconnecting office lights for one hour, can have a big impact on reducing energy consumption.

According to reports from the U.S. Energy Information Administration and United Nations, residential and commercial buildings account for 40% of the world's energy consumption and a third of all carbon emissions. Achieving double-digit reductions in consumption from this sector can have a significant impact on environmental sustainability.

In 2018, FirstService Residential's offices were among more than 820 worldwide turning off lights in a record-setting 133 million square feet of office space. If these same offices were to turn off their lights for one hour every day for a year, organizers claim it could help save more than 60 million kilowatts of electricity and $12 million in costs.

"Daylight Hour participation is a fun and resourceful way to support a universal cause and further our commitment to making a difference every day for the communities we serve," said Chuck Fallon, CEO of FirstService Residential. "As the industry leader, we have helped many of our managed communities reduce their energy costs, consumption and emissions."

Those very things are the focus of FirstService Residential's energy management and advisory division, FS Energy. Currently serving residential properties in New York, Florida, Illinois, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Ontario, FS Energy has helped FirstService Residential clients save millions of dollars in energy costs while significantly reducing their carbon footprints.
