FDB to Share Insights on Maximizing the Use of Unique Device Identifiers at UDI Conference 2019

FDB (First Databank, Inc.), the leading provider of drug and medical device knowledge that helps healthcare professionals make precise decisions, announced today that Patrick Lupinetti, J.D., Senior Vice President for Legal Services and Medical Device, will participate in a panel entitled "UDI Data Enrichment & Innovation: Leveraging UDI to Provide Extended Value" at the UDI Conference, June 11-12 in Baltimore, MD. The session will take place on Tuesday, June 11 from 10:45 a.m.-11:45 a.m. ET.

The need for regularity and consistency in medical device information has been one of the primary drivers behind the US Food and Drug Administration's development of the Unique Device Identifier (UDI), which creates a framework that can be employed in a wide variety of healthcare applications. Because of the UDI, those conducting clinical, supply chain, patient safety and research operations can now easily identify relevant device attributes to aid decision-making. The session will emphasize that the UDI initiative must consequently be viewed as much more than a regulatory requirement, but instead, a key that can unlock additional relevant product attributes, facilitate recall management, improve EHR documentation, and simplify inventory management. The presentation will outline the available opportunities and how they might be achieved with UDI-based data.

Mr. Lupinetti will be joined by co-panelists Dr. James Tcheng, Professor of Medicine, Duke University School of Medicine and Dr. Joseph Drozda, Director of Outcomes Research, Mercy Health. The panelists will share their insights on the UDI's role in supply chain processes, safety issues, point-of-care information delivery, and outcomes analysis, as well as provide a look into the key factors that will drive greater UDI adoption.

The session is ideal for anyone affected by the UDI requirement: medical device manufacturers whose product data will become more widely accessible to their customers; health care distributors and group purchasing organizations that can utilize the UDI for operational efficiency; hospitals and health care organizations that can leverage the UDI to benefit from a clinically-integrated supply chain; and for all health care industry professionals looking to support value-based care.

Mr. Lupinetti commented: "The pharmaceutical arena has benefitted from the same sort of opportunities, use cases and potential for added value due to the availability of standardized national drug codes (NDCs), and many of the solutions that worked for drugs are now feasible for medical devices with the development of the UDI. We're hoping the session will help identify those solutions and suggest how they might be achieved."
