Maritime Heritage Takes Centre Stage in Saint-Jean-Port-Joli

Government of Canada Supports the Fête des chants de marins

SAINT-JEAN-PORT-JOLI, QC, May 23, 2019 /CNW/ - The Government of Canada is committed to supporting organizations that reflect local heritage and organize community events that everyone can enjoy.

Today, the Honourable Pablo Rodriguez, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Multiculturalism, announced $22,500 in support for the 2019 Fête des chants de marins.

The funds, from the Local Festivals component of the Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage program, will help showcase maritime history and culture in Canada and abroad through a variety of activities, including numerous performances by talented musicians from Quebec and Europe.

The 21st Fête des chants de marins will be held from August 15-18. The gathering offers audiences performances that celebrate the St. Lawrence River along with its islands, sailors and history. The festival also explores the maritime heritage of the St. Lawrence's south shore through traditional sailor songs from here and abroad.

Events for this year's festival include: the regional artisan port market; the maritime seafood buffet prepared by restaurants in Saint-Jean-Port-Joli; the family zone with inflatable games and activities for the whole family; and performances showcasing traditional and re-enacted seafaring songs.

The program also includes several activities organized in partnership with local organizations and businesses, including exhibitions and workshops at the Musée de la mémoire vivante and the Musée maritime du Québec, along with boat tours and a three-hour musical cruise on the St. Lawrence River.
