Malong Technologies Sponsors iMaterialist Challenge on Product Recognition at CVPR 2019

SHENZHEN, China, May 20, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Artificial intelligence leader Malong Technologies is sponsoring the iMaterialist Challenge on Product Recognition, which began April 1 and concludes at the Sixth Annual Workshop on Fine-Grained Visual Categorization at CVPR 2019 on June 17 in Long Beach, CA.

This year's Challenge offers the largest dataset and scale of product diversity in history, with more than 1 million images including 2,019 stock-keeping units (SKUs) and more than 200 images per SKU.

"We are excited and honored to sponsor this year's iMaterialist Challenge," said Dr. Dinglong Huang, co-founder and chief executive officer, Malong Technologies. "International competitions like this one advance progress in computer vision technology and encourage the AI community to develop more impactful and innovative algorithms."

As computer vision systems become more prevalent in industry, especially in retail, they must recognize products based on images at the SKU level automatically and accurately. However, the degree of difficulty keeps increasing along with a growing number of SKUs and a shrinking of subtle differences among SKUs ? as, for example, different flavors of a soft drink might look the same, or images of a product or SKU look different under different lighting conditions or perspectives. Product photos that a consumer might post online ? known as user-generated content, or UGC ? can vary greatly from photos of the same product taken by a professional (professional-generated content, or PGC).

Malong Technologies and FGVC workshop organizers aim to encourage computer vision researchers to develop novel algorithms to tackle this interesting problem and advance the field of fine-grained visual categorization.

Nearly 100 teams from around the world are already signed up to test their algorithms and compete in the Challenge, and more are welcome to enter. The deadline for entries is June 2. Results of the competition will be revealed at the FGVC6 workshop on June 17.
