The CFPBJ inaugurates its new high performance mining and forestry equipment simulator

CHIBOUGAMAU, QC, May 17, 2019 /CNW Telbec/ - The Centre de formation professionnelle de la Baie-James (CFPBJ) has inaugurated a new high-fidelity mining equipment simulator. The acquisition of this tool for training in the mining sector was made possible through initial funding for CFPBJ's ore extraction study program. In addition, the Ministère de l'Éducation et de l'Enseignement supérieur (MEES) provided $310,000 and the Commission des partenaires du marché du travail (CPMT) granted $476,000 under the Programme partenarial pour la formation et l'innovation (PPFI) to purchase equipment for the program to train students in operating heavy machinery on forest roads.

This new state-of-the-art tool will reaffirm the CFPBJ's position as an academic leader in specialized vocational training. Spending more hours operating equipment will greatly enhance the skills of students in programs devoted to ore extraction and heavy equipment operation on forest roads.

"We are committed to continuously improving our training programs by ensuring that they are as realistic and dynamic as possible," said Sonia Caron, Director of Services and Centre. "Virtual reality in vocational training allows students to consolidate their learning and reach a level of development that will greatly accelerate their entry into the workforce."

"The labour market is undergoing major changes, and the need for skilled labour is one of the challenges in adapting to these realities. Your government is pleased to support the Centre de formation professionnelle de la Baie-James in acquiring equipment that will provide training at the cutting edge of technology," said Jean Boulet, Minister of Labour, Employment and Social Solidarity and Minister Responsible for the Mauricie Region.

A realistic simulator?safety and efficiency
This purchase will make it easier to learn how to handle heavy equipment on forest roads and operate underground mining equipment. It will also enable customized training for surface mines. Multisensory simulation will allow students to test reality without the dangers of a real field operation. Students will be able to practice in all types of conditions, including unforeseen situations: punctures, mechanical breakdowns, fires, etc. In addition, complementary equipment will allow for real-time data analysis, and the simulation modules can be customized to reproduce the actual physical environment of partner mine sites.

Safety is also at the heart of the CFPBJ's concerns. "This simulator enhances skills needed to work safely and use the machines efficiently. The risk of accidents is considerably reduced because students have many hours of driving experience before they operate the machinery," added Ms. Caron.

Significant benefits
The entire Nord-du-Québec region and the mining and forestry industry throughout Quebec will benefit from one of the best academic programs available, thanks to a state-of-the-art training and development centre. The simulator will reduce fuel costs, accidents, equipment breakdowns and operational costs.
