19th day of the emergency measures - Overview of flood waters: the situation requires constant vigilance
MONTRÉAL, May 6, 2019 /CNW Telbec/ - The director of the Service de sécurité incendie de Montréal (SIM) and civil protection coordinator, Bruno Lachance, has reviewed the water level situation in the Rivière des Prairies and Lac des Deux-Montagnes. Although the weather is currently mild, the civil protection for the agglomeration of Montréal reminds citizens not to let their guard down and to remain vigilant. The threat of flooding remains and the risk of breakage of temporary dikes is still present.
"Water levels are slowly decreasing around the island of Montréal. However, we must not lower our guard since the threat remains given the water pressure on the temporary dikes. The maintenance of the state of emergency until Wednesday remains necessary. We are not yet in a recovery phase. Residents in at-risk and flooded areas must stay alert" said Bruno Lachance, director of the Service de sécurité incendie de Montréal (SIM) and civil protection coordinator.
The Centre de sécurité civile of the agglomeration has observed a downward trend in water levels on all waterways, except for the Lac Saint-Louis, where the level continues to increase slightly. For its part, the flow at the Carillon dam has remained stable for the past 24 hours and is now below the maximum level reached in 2017.
The authorities anticipate possible rainfall this week which could delay the decrease in water levels. It is therefore premature at this time to remove the sandbags and start cleaning. As soon as the situation permits, the coordinator will give instructions for dismantling the dikes, cleaning and reintegration.
