Statement by Minister Rodriguez on Ramadan

Tonight, Muslims in Canada and around the world will celebrate the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan

OTTAWA, May 6, 2019 /CNW/ - Tonight marks the beginning of Ramadan, a holy month of fasting and prayer observed by Muslims in Canada and around the world.

Ramadan is a time of introspective reflection, empathy for those who suffer, and generosity towards the less fortunate. Muslims who are observing Ramadan will fast from dawn to dusk and then gather with family and friends for a shared evening meal, known as iftar.

During Ramadan, let us take the time to recognize and appreciate the contribution of the Canadian Muslim community to the social and cultural fabric of our society. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about our Muslim citizens. Muslim Canadians help make Canada an inclusive country and a great place to live. During this month, I invite Canadians of all backgrounds to celebrate what makes our communities unique and dynamic. We must remember it is our collective responsibility to fight all forms of Islamophobia, prejudice, hate and discrimination.

As Minister of Canadian Heritage and Multiculturalism, I extend my best wishes to all Muslims observing Ramadan. Ramadan Mubarak!
