B.C.'s Labour Code changes are good news for workers
VANCOUVER, April 30, 2019 /CNW/ - Unifor applauds B.C.'s NDP government for new laws that will end contract flipping by employers.
"Many of our members have lost their jobs because of this heartless, money grab by employers," said Unifor President Jerry Dias. "We commend the BC NDP for changing the labour code to ensure greater stability in the workplace."
The changes mean that workers who have built up fair wages and job security over years of hard work and dedication do not see those stripped away when contracts are re-tendered.
However, Unifor Western Regional Director Joie Warnock is disappointed a two-step process is still required for union certification. "Even after a majority of workers sign union cards, they still have to wait five more days. During that time, workers are often intimidated and threatened with job loss by their employers. The Green Party, with its balance of power, has ensured that flawed process remains."
Unifor represents thousands of workers who have been at risk of contract flipping, including at B.C. Transit, office cleaning and janitorial services, security services and airport workers.
