Statement by the Prime Minister on South Africa Freedom Day

OTTAWA, April 27, 2019 /CNW/ - The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on South Africa Freedom Day:

"Today, we join South Africans to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the first democratic elections in South Africa and the end of apartheid.

"In their first election open to all voters, the people of South Africa chose anti-apartheid revolutionary Nelson Mandela as their president. 

"Nelson Mandela will always be a symbol of liberation and freedom. His work, alongside countless others, to advance human rights and equality, champion democracy, and fight injustice laid the foundation for a new, democratic South Africa and inspired freedom movements around the world.

"Canada and South Africa share a strong and lasting bond, anchored by our shared values of inclusion, diversity, and democracy, and Canada's leading role in the international fight against apartheid. Our two countries work closely together, through the United Nations, the G20, the Commonwealth and other organizations, to carry Nelson Mandela's vision forward and build a more just, peaceful, and inclusive world.

"On behalf of the Government of Canada, I congratulate the South African people on this milestone anniversary. Today, we are reminded of the power of individuals to change the arc of history, and the responsibility we all share to serve the world."
