Government of Canada announces judicial appointments in the province of Ontario
OTTAWA, April 24, 2019 /CNW/ - The Honourable David Lametti, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointments:
The Honourable Robbie D. Gordon, Regional Senior Judge for the Northeast Region of the Superior Court of Justice, is transferred back to the regular complement in Sudbury, effective April 15, 2019.
The Honourable Gregory Ellies, a Judge of the Superior Court of Justice in North Bay, is appointed Regional Senior Judge for the Northeast Region to replace Mr. Justice Robbie D. Gordon, effective April 15, 2019.
Biographies
Justice Gordon was appointed to the Superior Court of Justice of Ontario in 2006 and served for 8 years before his elevation to Regional Senior Judge in 2014.
He received a Bachelor of Laws from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1985 and was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1987. He practised with Gordon & Gordon from 1987 to 1992 before becoming a sole practitioner until his appointment. His main areas of practice were family law, real estate, criminal law, municipal law, and general litigation.
As an active member of the legal community, Justice Gordon has been a member of the Canadian Bar Association, the Ontario Bar Association and the Temiskaming Bar Association. He is a past Trustee of the Temiskaming Board of Education a past Director of the Temiskaming Hospital Foundation.
Justice Ellies was appointed a judge of the Superior Court of Justice of Ontario in 2010.
He received a B.A. (1981) and an LL.B. (1984) from the University of Western Ontario and was admitted to the Ontario Bar in 1986. He was a partner with Lucenti, Orlando & Ellies since 1997 until his appointment to the court. He was previously a partner at Donnelly, Birnie (1990-1997), Birnie & McMillan (1988-1990) and at Ellies & Saltstone (1986-1988).
Justice Ellies taught criminal and constitutional law part-time at Nipissing University (1987-1989), has been a member of the Criminal Lawyers Association (1998-2006) and is a member of the Advocates Society.
He has been a frequent speaker at schools including Canadore College, Nipissing University and the Rotary Club. He was a member of the Canadian Cancer Society and the Kiwanis Club of Rotary for nearly 40 years.
