Stay clear, stay safe this Easter weekend

Warmer weather means thin ice and higher water levels near generating stations

TORONTO, April 18, 2019 /CNW/ - With winter now behind us, many Ontarians will be heading outdoors to celebrate the recent arrival of spring this long Easter weekend. Ontario Power Generation (OPG) reminds people to continue to exercise caution when around Ontario's waterways.

"Water flows and levels can become dangerous very quickly and without notice, particularly during periods of significant rainfall," said Mike Martelli, OPG President of Renewable Generation. "Please respect the signs and barriers around OPG facilities. They are there for your safety, regardless of the season."

Recent snow melt and precipitation have led to water levels rising in many regions across Ontario. High water flows, melting ice, and unstable banks can be very dangerous. OPG strongly advises residents to keep children and pets away from all waterways. The areas near OPG dams and hydroelectric stations also have warning signs, buoys, fences, booms and barriers to warn people of the dangers of coming too close.

Enjoy your Easter Weekend and remember to stay clear and stay safe.
