MONTRÉAL, April 15, 2019 /CNW Telbec/ - With International Osteopathic Healthcare Week unfolding from April 14 to 20, 2019, Ostéopathie Québec, the largest professional association of osteopaths in Canada, has launched its annual awareness campaign. The theme this year is Des gestes qui parlent (or "A Hands-on Message").

"Osteopaths are an important link in the health-care chain in Québec," says Marc Gauthier, President of Ostéopathie Québec. "With that in mind, we're taking the opportunity of International Osteopathic Healthcare Week to remind the public that our members make a real difference in the lives of millions of people every year. Working in concert with all stakeholders and providers in the health system, they perform meaningful manipulations that promote wellness," he adds.

This year's theme, "Des gestes qui parlent," is a reminder that hands are central to osteopaths' professional practice: hands performing actions that relieve people's pain and improve their everyday lives. For the occasion, a 30-second video vignette highlighting osteopaths and their impact on the lives of thousands of Quebecers will be unveiled this week and posted on the association's various Web and social media platforms. The animated video uses distinctive design to explain osteopaths' practice visually, showing how this type of care helps people and is suitable for everyone.

Professional order soon to be created
More than five years ago, Ostéopathie Québec began the process leading to creation of a professional order of osteopaths. To that end, the association is working closely with the Office des professions du Québec (OPQ) and partners. With the profession of osteopathy now widely established in Québec, Ostéopathie Québec's initiative aims to ensure that the profession is legally regulated and the public is properly protected.

"The number of annual visits to osteopaths is constantly growing in Québec, with more than two million consultations provided by Ostéopathie Québec members alone. Establishment of a professional order of osteopaths is essential to ensuring the quality of services rendered and, in turn, guaranteeing public protection. We are confident that significant progress will be made on this file in the coming months," Mr. Gauthier concludes.

Osteopathy has been an established practice for more than 35 years in Québec and is already legally regulated in 17 countries around the world, including the United Kingdom, France, Switzerland, Australia and New Zealand. In 2018 alone, three new countries joined the list: Luxembourg, Denmark and Russia.
