MEDIA ADVISORY - PortsToronto and Redpath Sugar Celebrate the First Ship of the Season at the 158th Beaver Hat Ceremony


TORONTO, April 5, 2019 /CNW/ - On Tuesday, April 9, media are invited to join PortsToronto's Harbour Master Emeritus Angus Armstrong and Redpath Sugar to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the St. Lawrence Seaway and the opening of the 2019 commercial shipping season as the MV Cape arrives as the Port of Toronto's first ocean-going vessel (also known as a "saltie") of the year.

For the past 158 years, PortsToronto's Harbour Master has crowned the Captain of the first ship into the Port with an antique silk and beaver top hat. This year, the MV Cape won the race to be the first ship to Port, bringing more than 18,920 metric tonnes of sugar from Guatemala to Redpath Sugar, a company that has been crafting quality food products in Canada for more than 160 years.

WHAT:          

MV Cape Captain Pero Mikelic and his crew will be welcomed at the Redpath Sugar plant and crowned with an antique silk and beaver top hat by Harbour Master Emeritus Angus Armstrong. The ceremony marks the first ship to arrive in Toronto and the opening of the commercial shipping season.




Media will have the opportunity to go behind the scenes of a working ocean freighter.
