U.S. Commission on Civil Rights Public Comment Session

WHAT:
The U.S. Commission on Civil Rights (Comisión Nacional de Derechos Civiles) will hold a public comment session on the condition of immigration detention centers and status of treatment of immigrants in detention, including children. (Para ver informacíon en español, consulte aquí.)
The Commission's 2015 report, With Liberty and Justice for All: The State of Civil Rights at Immigration Detention Facilities, addressed the status of detained undocumented immigration children. In July 2018, the Commission voted to reopen its investigation on the conditions of immigration detention, and appointed a Subcommittee to examine the issue further. We seek to hear from members of the public, including advocates, legal experts, affected persons, and other individuals who wish to speak on the issue. The Commission has previously assessed the civil rights of immigrants, including issuing statements and correspondence with government officials. Prior Commission positions, by majority vote, include disapproving of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) actions at local courthouses, encouraging greater oversight in light of alleged abusive practices at detention facilities, and condemning the announcement of imposition of quotas on immigrant court judges.
The Commission is specifically seeking public comment on the changes in policy, procedures, treatment and impact of the detention and separation of immigrant families detained at the southern border by the current Administration.
