Federman & Sherwood Announces Settlement and Claim Deadline in Samsung Top-Loading Washing Machine Litigation

Federman & Sherwood, co-lead counsel in a consumer class action announces that a settlement has been reached with defendant Samsung Electronics and retailer defendants including Best Buy, The Home Depot, and Lowe's Home Centers concerning over 2 million 2011-2016 models of Samsung top-loading washing machines whose tops are alleged could detach during operation and whose drain pumps could break or detach during operation. Consumers contended that the washing machines, whose operations caused some of the devices to explode in owners' homes, are defective; Samsung and the retailer defendants deny all of the allegations of the lawsuit, including those relating to defects in the washers.

"This has been a long and hard fought case to get relief for the consumers," notes William B. Federman, founder of Federman & Sherwood and co-lead attorney for the plaintiffs in the suit. "Over 2 million of these machines were sold in the U.S. that could cause flooding, home damage and even personal injury to consumers and their families."

The settlement class includes every resident of the United States and its territories who was the original purchaser of a new Top-Load Samsung Washer for household use. Affected owners can qualify for benefits under the settlement that include rebates, refunds, or reimbursement of certain expenses, costs, and repairs.

Additional information about the settlement, including answers to frequently asked questions, a list of included washers, and instructions for filing claims, are available on the settlement website, https://www.washermdlsettlement.com. Claim forms must be submitted by August 6, 2019, and owners who wish to exclude themselves from or object to the settlement must do so by June 7, 2019. A Fairness Hearing will be held by the Court on August 22, 2019 to determine whether to grant final approval to the Settlement.
