Benchmark Litigation Names Robin Cohen "Insurance Lawyer of the Year" and Honors McKool Smith with "Texas Law Firm of the Year" and "Impact Case of the Year" Award

NEW YORK, March 4, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- McKool Smith Principal Robin Cohen has been named "Insurance Lawyer of the Year" for the third straight year at the 2019 Benchmark Litigation awards reception in New York City on February 28. In addition, Benchmark Litigation honored McKool Smith as "Texas Law Firm of the Year" and presented the firm with the "Impact Case of the Year" award for winning a $145 million patent infringement verdict on behalf WiLAN Inc. against Apple, Inc.

As a leader in the field of insurance recovery litigation, Robin Cohen works with an elite group of trial lawyers across offices in New York, California, and Texas. Over the past year, she has notched several important victories for McKool Smith's clients, including a unanimous Delaware Supreme Court order affirming a decision for Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association of America and other related entities, securing over $40 million in coverage from three insurance companies.

Ms. Cohen also served as counsel to Apex Parks Group, which won a $10 million verdict against Protective Life Insurance Company. Jurors in an Alabama state court found that Protective unjustifiably breached its contract with Apex when it refused to pay death benefits owed under a key man insurance policy issued on the life of Apex's Chief Executive Officer, Alexander "Al" Weber, Jr., after his untimely death.

McKool Smith's major litigation wins over the last year included obtaining an order reinstating a $75 million patent infringement verdict for Ericsson Inc. and Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson against TCL Communications Technology Holdings Ltd. The order also awarded Ericsson an additional $35 million, including approximately $10.2 million in prejudgment interest and $25 million in enhanced damages due to TCL's willful infringement. The firm also secured a $10.6 million patent infringement verdict for Optis Wireless Technology, LLC and PanOptis Patent Management LLC against Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. and Huawei Device USA, Inc.

With 165 trial lawyers across offices in Austin, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Marshall, New York, and Washington, D.C., McKool Smith has established a reputation as one of America's leading trial firms. Since 2006, the firm has secured 10 nine-figure jury verdicts and 12 eight-figure jury verdicts. The firm has also won more VerdictSearch and The National Law Journal "Top 100 Verdicts" over the last 10 years than any other law firm in the country. Courtroom successes like these have earned McKool Smith critical acclaim and helped the firm become what The Wall Street Journal describes as "one of the biggest law firm success stories of the past decade." McKool Smith represents clients in complex commercial litigation, intellectual property, bankruptcy, and white collar defense matters.
