National Social Art Forum - Serving youth homelessness

QUEBEC CITY, Feb. 18, 2019 /CNW Telbec/ - On February 22 and 23, 2019, the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec will host the National Social Art Forum. Initiated by Centre Jacques-Cartier, this national rendez-vous aims to enable speakers and artists to create a network of sharing and resources in order to be better equipped and to contribute to the improvement of the practices of intervention through art, cultural mediation and social art.

The Forum
In a spirit of compartmentalization and inclusiveness, artists and representatives from the cultural, community, government, health and research communities will intermingle with young people between the ages of 16 and 35 who are at risk of homelessness, in order to show everyone, but particularly the most vulnerable, the benefits and positive impacts of artistic experiences. More than 50 young marginalized adults from five Canadian provinces (British Columbia, Ontario, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia and Quebec City) are participating in the project, which will help to produce concrete outcomes across the country.

"Cultural mediation, art therapy art and social art have been among the most explored paths in recent decades and favourable circumstances have been observed, particularly in recent years. At the same time, more and more artists want to understand their work from a new angle of "by and for" the community," says Claire Goutier, head of the pancanadian project "Social Art at the Service of Youth Homelessness."

A more humane than theoretical programming
Several participatory workshops and conferences are planned, including participatory body painting sessions, dance therapy sessions, short film screening, co-creation of micro-projects in social art, to name a few. Guest speakers will include Marco Pronovost, Social Art Consultant and Honorary Chairman of the Forum, and Angèle Séguin, Founder of the Théâtre des Petites LANTERNES and Guest of Honour. More than 20 organizations ? artistic or community-based, will share their knowledge.

Marco Pronovost, Honorary Chairman

In 2017, Marco Pronovost was named one of five Canadian Young Cultural Innovators by the Canada Council for the Arts. He is an artist-mediator whose work qualifies as social art. A choreographer, director and researcher, he explores the relationship with the public and challenges the fourth wall. Marco is a Fellow of the Global Salzburg Seminar in Austria, and manifests his interest in social art in other professional spheres ? curator, mediator, consultant, instructor, lecturer and author ? he is one of the few specialists who address issues of cultural mediation and public engagement as both an artist and a theorist.
