HOMER Energy Among Finalists for Prestigious Ashden Award

BOULDER, Colo., Jan. 17, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- HOMER Energy is proud to be listed among 19 finalists for an Ashden Award, a UK prize rewarding organizations that contribute to the global sustainable energy transformation by introducing new technologies and business models. HOMER Energy applied for the 2019 award in the category of "Financial or Business Model Innovation," which has among its requirements innovations that "improve the financial viability of enterprises to bring affordable, sustainable energy products and services to markets" and which "reduce risk and cost of capital associated with investing in underdeveloped markets."

HOMER Pro, the company's flagship software, reduces risk for distributed energy developers by providing a reliable software program that can model and compare sizes and configurations of hybrid renewable energy systems. By simulating their projects with the HOMER Energy software, users can get a realistic sense of the capital and operating costs of the systems they are designing. They can make better choices and improve the prospects that these systems will meet the needs of the communities they are designed for. The availability of HOMER software in developing countries also contributes to the growth and expertise of the renewable energy industry wherever it is used.

The Ashden Awards focus on the work that organizations carry out in low and middle income developing countries. People from these countries make up a significant proportion of HOMER Energy users and software license owners. The original HOMER Pro software grew out of the "village power program" at the US National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) a decade ago and was focused on providing hybrid renewable energy solutions to remote, developing country communities that were either diesel-powered or had no access to electricity at all.

Ashden award winners will be announced on July 3rd and the ceremony will be a part of London's Climate Action Week. If awarded an Ashden prize, HOMER Energy plans to use the money to expand training programs in developing countries so that local renewable energy developers can build the capacity to design technically sound and economically feasible projects.
